    The NLN is the only entity that has formally delineated these roles, and this book formalizes that information. It does not focus on the evidence-based literature support for the derivation of the competencies; it states what the competencies and task statements are and the general historical background on how and why the roles were identified.

    • The third academic nurse educator role  – academic nurse educator, novice – was identified in 2020.  This role identifies the beginning or novice academic nurse educator.  The competencies and task statements are published for the first time in this edition.  A new certification was developed for the role of the academic novice nurse educator (CNEn). 
    • A fourth academic nurse educator role was identified in 2024 for the Academic Nurse Educators who teach in practical/vocational nursing education settings.  These competencies and task statements are also included in this new edition.  A fourth certification was created, known as the Academic Practical/Vocational Program Nurse Educator (CNEpv).
